What is Direct Cremation?

We’ve all heard of cremation, yet when people are introduced to the words direct cremation, they scratch their heads and wonder what this “direct” is all about. Fortunately, direct cremation is similar to the type of cremation that you probably had in mind, but with a little more to it than that. When someone passes, if they or their family have opted to have them directly cremated, then the process will begin almost immediately. Meaning that there will not be any type of funeral service afforded to the family, as the body is immediately cremated soon after death. It’s important to note that this option saves people a lot of money as the price of embalmment is not necessary.

Affordable

One of the biggest reasons many people are drawn to the option of direct cremation is due to its large affordability. Unlike other options, direct cremation doesn’t involve a lot of other factors, meaning essentially all that is paid for is the process itself, perhaps transportation of the body as well. While disposition methods allow for funerals to be held, it is typical that families will spend large amounts of money for things like embalming, caskets, burial plots, flowers, and much more.

More Time to Plan

One of the most stressful aspects of planning a funeral service is the tight time crunch that families often find themselves under. When people choose direct cremation, however, this time crunch is virtually non-existent. This is because when a traditional funeral service is being planned, one in which the body is planned to be present, it is typically required that the body be embalmed prior to avoid any premature decomposition. However, with direct cremation, since the process begins soon after the deceased has passed, the necessity for embalming costs is eliminated. Additionally, families also avoid paying for things such as caskets and burial plots. While one cannot have a traditional funeral service in which the body is present, this does not mean a family cannot plan on holding their own type of ceremony or service at their home or any other location of their choosing. Families have more freedom and more time to make decisions on how to honor the deceased after their death.
