Arthur Henry Strass

September 4, 1926 — July 14, 2018

Arthur Henry Strass, 91, of Crystal Lake, formerly of Woodstock, passed away peacefully at JourneyCare Hospice in Woodstock on Saturday, July 14, 2018. He was born on September 4, 1926 in Chicago to Henry and Barbara (nee Schneider) Strass.
Mr. Strass was a veteran serving in the Navy on the Aircraft Carrier USS Suwannee (CVE-27) in the Asiatic Pacific during WWII. He received the Victory Medal, 2 Star Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon Star (President Truman).
He was a master carpenter for over 65 years – his work was his hobby. He and his wife, Carolyn Sue, sang as members of the funeral mass choir at St. Mary’s and also associates with Sisters of the Living Word.  He loved to read, do Sudoku puzzles, Free Cell on the computer, and watch TV.
The family would like to give special thanks to all caregivers, nurses, staff and volunteers, who made Art’s stay at Crystal Pines so wonderful. A very special thanks to the hospice team at JourneyCare who made Art’s last days very comfortable.
Art will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 18 years, Carolyn Sue; his children, Barbara (the late William) Quinn, Lawrence Strass, Nancy (Robert) Reilly, and Judith (Jeffrey) Thomas; 10 cherished grandchildren; and11 great-grandchildren.  Many loving friends and extended family also survive.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean (nee Collins); his second wife, Nancy (nee Wells); his children, Susan (Greg) Aleridge and Thomas Strass; grandchildren, Jennifer, Tracy and Andrea Aleridge; and by his parents.
Please join the Strass Family on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at St. Mary Parish, 312 Lincoln Avenue in Woodstock for a 10am Visitation and an 11am Mass of Christian Burial.  Following the Mass, Carolyn Strass would like to invite all those in attendance to a luncheon in St. Joseph’s Hall to celebrate the life of Art Strass.
