Bernadette Mary “Bernie” Jarosz, 86, of Crystal Lake, IL, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 16, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, Bernadette was the daughter of the late Andrew and Emily Byrdak.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Joseph M. “Joe” Jarosz; her children, Judith (Shawn) Walker of Grayslake, IL, Joseph A. (Jeanne) Jarosz of Harvard, MA, and Jerome A. (Martha) Jarosz of Arlington Heights, IL; and her beloved sister, Barbara (John) Malone of Lockport, IL. Bernadette was the proud grandmother of Adam (Lauren Day) Walker of Floyds Knobs, IN, and Michael, Jessie, Katie, Scott, and Lance. She was also a loving great-grandmother to Clarke and Frankie Walker.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Emily Byrdak.
Although small in stature, Bernie’s big smile and larger-than-life personality made her a memorable and cherished presence to all who knew her. She had a warm and loving spirit that touched the hearts of many, and she will be deeply missed.
Bernadette’s life was defined by her devotion to her family. She was a kind, generous, and nurturing presence, embracing every role with grace and strength. Later in life, after becoming an empty nester, she took up running and was dedicated to her daily run, no matter the weather—a symbol of her resilience and determination.
In addition to her family life, Bernie had a longstanding career with the Crystal Lake School District. She first worked as a beloved crossing guard, where she was known as a reliable, energetic, and always-smiling face who safely escorted students to school. Her bottomless supply of sweet treats for the walkers made her a favorite among the children. Later, as a teaching aide at Crystal Lake South High School, Bernie continued to make a lasting impact, earning the love and appreciation of both students and faculty alike.
As the eldest of the cousins on her mother’s side, Bernie became the matriarch of the Wygonski family. She delighted in organizing their annual Christmas gatherings, ensuring that family ties remained strong through the years.
Her 65-year marriage to Joe was a testament to their enduring love and devotion. She found great pride and joy in the lives and success of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her legacy will continue through the many family connections and friendships that she created and maintained, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A visitation to celebrate Bernadette’s life will be held from 9 am until 11 am on Saturday, December 21, at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake, followed by a funeral mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 451 W Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake at 11:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in honor of Bernadette's memory.
