Daniel Benninghoven was born in Evanston, Illinois on July 28, 1941 and died in Barrington, Illinois on February 17, 2022.
He attended high school at the Cranbrook Institute outside of Detroit, and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Northwestern University. His deceased parents were Fran Fairweather and Edward Benninghoven.
He is predeceased by his sister Christina Kingsmill and beloved son Cameron. He is survived by his niece Emily Kingsmill French of Redmond, California, his former wife Ellen Benninghoven and guardian/partner Chris Collins.
His greatest love was of the water and sailing. Affectionately called "the captain" for decades he loved race sailing, successfully completing among others, several Chicago to Mackinaw Island races. He was active in Big Brothers and Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago, a member the Economic Club of Chicago, and a former member of both the Racquet Club of Chicago and the Chicago Yacht Club.
A celebration of Daniel’s life will be held, Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 11 AM at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 337 Ridge Rd , Barrington Hills, IL 60010. Friends may gather at the church from 10 AM until the time of service.

He wished it to be noted at his memorial service that "old sailors never die – they just sail away." Goodbye, dearest friend.
