Donald “Don” J. Schaffrath, 88, of Crystal Lake passed away on November 14, 2022. He was born an only child to Joseph and Margretta Schaffrath in Chicago.
He was a 1953 graduate of Foreman High School where he met and eventually married the love of his life, Carolyn Peterson. They married in 1956. Upon graduation, Don signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox as a pitcher. From there he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served for 2 years ultimately moving on to become a Local 73 Sheetmetal worker, beginning and ending his career with American Engineering in Arlington Heights. Retiring in 1997.
Don was a White Sox fan through and through. Always wearing his Sox attire and meeting new friends and talking to people wherever he went. Always joking with an easy smile and a firm handshake. Don loved all sports and spent the majority of his retirement golfing or at a baseball diamond.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; daughters, Sheryl (Darwin) Devers and Dawn Alig; grandchildren, Nicole, Chase, Aidan, and Avery.
Don was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Christy.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 19, from 9am to a time of service at 11am at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial in Don’s name to the Macular Degeneration Research or the Alzheimer’s Association .
