Donald Owens

November 9, 1925 — April 7, 2017

Donald E. Owens, longtime resident of Barrington, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017 at the age of 91.

An Electricians Mate 3rd Class, Don served on the USNTC Sampson, N.Y., the USS Yosemite AD 19, and the USS Hooper Island during World War II. He attended Aquinas College and graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Don had a long and distinguished career with Anaconda Wire & Cable, travelling the world and retiring as Senior Vice President. Don and Nona made an annual pilgrimage to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby and dabbled in the horse industry. He enjoyed playing golf and puttering in the yard, always looked forward to a good card game, be it gin, bridge, poker or multi-handed solitaire, and could spend hours working a jigsaw or crossword puzzle (no, using a dictionary is not cheating).

Don is survived by his five children, Janet Owens (Nazmul Chaudhury), Peggy (David) Hirsch, Ann Owens, William (Dana) Owens, and John Owens; eight grandchildren, David (Lauren) Hirsch, Amanda Hirsch, Emily Hirsch, Charles Hirsch, Adeline Hirsch, Azure Savage, Alexander Owens and Abigail Owens; his sisters, Shirley McCartin and Mary Cleypool; and brothers Edward James (Barbara) Owens and John (Genevieve) Owens.

Don was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Nona (nee Arnoldi); his parents, Edward and Minnie Owens; and his sister, Dorothy Parente.

Visitation will be Monday, April 10th, from 4 pm until 8 pm at St. Anne Catholic Church, 120 Ela St. (not Ela Rd.), Barrington. Visitation will continue at the church Tuesday, April 11th, from 10 am until the time of mass at 11 am. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Barrington.
