Donald A. Phalin

Donald A. Phalin, age 88 of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully at the Reserve at Oswego, IL on Saturday, December 4, 2021. He was the youngest of five children, born in McHenry, IL on July 4, 1933, to Thomas and Ellen (Spencer) Phalin.

Don attended McHenry High School graduating in 1951. He married his high school sweetheart Arline (Svoboda) at St. Patrick’s Church in McHenry in 1953. He and Arline initially resided in Rockford and McHenry before moving to Crystal Lake in 1957 and remained residents until 2020.

Don trained and worked as a certified meat cutter for National Tea. He then had a successful career as a licensed insurance agent for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company. After retiring from John Hancock, he worked part-time at a local auto parts distribution company until age 78.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend known for his “gift of gab,” friendly personality, love of family and McHenry County.

Don is survived by his children: Deborah (Stephan) Moen and Lori of Oswego, IL; Timothy of Crystal Lake; Michael (Andrea) of Harrisburg, IL; his grandchildren: Ryan (Tara) Moen, Christa, Connor and Cooper Phalin, and Kelsey Wilson and five great grandchildren.

Preceding Don in death were his wife Arline in March 2021, his children, Tom and Sandy, his grandson, Joel Moen, his parents, brothers, sisters, and in-laws.

A visitation will be on Sunday, December 12, 2021, from 1:00-5:00pm with a prayer service at 3:30 PM, officiated by Rev. Hugh Fullmer, at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. Mass will be Monday, December 13 at 10:00 a.m. officiated by Rev. Msgr. Stephen J. Knox, S.T.L., at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 451 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. Burial will follow at Crystal Lake Memorial Park.
