Edgar “Bruce” Nelson, 90, was born June 26, 1927 in Oak Park to Edward and Nellie (nee Johnson) Nelson. He passed away Monday, March 26, 2018 in Woodstock.
Bruce, as he was known, spent his early years in Chicago. In 1940, his family moved to a farm in Palatine. Being developmentally disabled, Bruce learned to take care of animals and do other chores. He loved the farm. In 1978, after his parents passed away, he joined his sister Nancy in her home in Crystal Lake for 19 years and attended Pioneer Center. In 1997, he moved to Sheltered Village in Woodstock. He lived there with his many friends, under the loving care of the staff, until his final days.
Bruce is survived by his sister, Nancy (the late Glen) Gieseke; his nephews, David, Donald and Edward; and his grandnephews and grandnieces.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Herbert (Virginia) and Wallace (Marilyn) Nelson.
A visitation will be held from 5pm until time of funeral service at 7pm, Monday, April 2, 2018 at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. Burial will take place Tuesday at Randhill Cemetery in Arlington Heights.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Sheltered Village, 600 Borden St., Woodstock, IL 60098 or Pioneer Center, 4031 W. Dayton St., McHenry, IL 60050.
