Edward was born January 9, 1946 in Chicago. He passed away peacefully July 19, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
Officer Edward R. Szos was sworn in as a Buffalo Grove Police Officer on September 7, 1976, and retired on June 3, 2005, after 28 years of service. Officer Szos worked as a patrol officer until 1984, when he was assigned to the Directed Patrol Unit with a focus on impaired driving enforcement. He returned back to patrol and became a Field Training Officer in 1990. Officer Szos was also a Hostage Negotiator for the local emergency response team, a sign language interpreter, and a certified Truck Enforcement Officer. During his career, he received a Certificate of Commendation in 1977, several Honorable Mentions, 2004 Employee of the Year and numerous citizen letters of commendation which reflected his dedication to serving the community of Buffalo Grove. Officer Szos was a positive influence to many, including his nephew, Michael, who is currently a Deputy Chief with the Buffalo Grove Police Department.
Edward is survived by his wife of 20 years, Susan; children, Nikki (Patrick Chalmers) Neumayer, Stephanie Neumayer, and Eric (Amanda) Szos; granddaughter, Kailey Neumayer; brother, Robert Szos; nephew Michael (Dana) Szos; and great niece Sabrina. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Szos.
Visitation will be 3-9pm, Monday, July 24 at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Rd.), Barrington. Memorial procession through Buffalo Grove and Wauconda will begin Tuesday, July 25 at 10am, at the funeral home in Barrington.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, or to the family.
