Elizabeth G. “Betty” Murphy, 88, of Barrington, died, Wednesday, September 9, 2015, at home.
She was born on January 19, 1927, to John and Elizabeth Gleason, in Duluth, Minnesota.
Betty married Bob Murphy on August 13, 1946 in Milwaukee, WI, they were married for 62 years. They moved to Barrington in 1954. Betty was a past president of St. Anne’s Woman’s Club and the Auxiliary of Countryside Center. She was employed as an editorial assistant with Technical Publishing, retiring in 1986. An avid Bridge player she was in numerous bridge clubs. She spent many hours during the spring and summer in her gardens. She was an expert seamstress and had a great eye for home décor. She and Bob loved to dance and enjoyed traveling across the country visiting with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Besides being a wife and mother, Betty was a great friend to those that knew her.
She is survived by her loving children, Dan (Peggy) Murphy, Kathleen (William) Kohlhase, Norah (William) O’Brien, Eileen Murphy, and Mary Margaret Murphy (Matthew Greenwell); grandchildren, Sean (Samantha) Murphy, Megan (Kevin) Sullivan, Maureen O’Brien (Clint Ulrich), Michael (Jamie) O’Brien, Patricia (Shawn) Schmidt, Jennifer (Rafa) Casado, Emily (fiancé Brian Stepping) Kohlhase, Andrew Greenwell and Connor Greenwell; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Patricia Larson, and Kathleen (James) Matthews; and one nephew, James (Patty) Larson.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Murphy; and their son, Michael Murphy.
Memorial visitation will be held Wednesday, September 16, from 10 a.m until the time of mass at 11 a.m., at St. Anne Catholic Church, 120 Ela Street, (corner of Franklin and Ela Streets) Barrington, IL 60010.
