Esther Schultz (nee Altergott) passed away peacefully at home on February 10, 2022.
Esther was born on January 4, 1931, in Chicago to Friedrich (Fritz) and Sophie (nee Schweigerdt) Altergott. She attended Schurz High School and Elmhurst College. She was the beloved wife of the late Derald (Dow) Schultz whom she married in 1951, and the loving mother of Kerin Montgomery, Kurt (Wendy) Schultz and Kyle (Catherine) Schultz, proud grandmother of Lindsay (Chris) Prewitt, Lauren Schultz, Leslie (Chris) Rothan, Derek Schultz, Tyler (Shayna) Schultz and Christine (Lauren) Schultz-Richert, and great grandmother of Sydney, Alex and Ethan Latzke, and Sawyer, Amelia and Silas Rothan.
A resident of Barrington since 1964, Esther was, for many years, the Civic Hostess for the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce. She was a musician, an artist, and an avid volunteer. Over the years, she was very active in the Church, as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, a Youth Fellowship leader, Women’s Fellowship officer, and a Choir member. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and a member of the Auxiliary of Countryside Association, having served as Treasurer for many years.
Esther was very active in working to bring a hospital to the Barrington area. She was a charter member of the Good Shepherd Hospital Auxiliary, serving on the Executive Board, chairing the Scholarship Committee, volunteering at the Catchpenny Resale Shoppe and at the hospital. In recognition of her dedication and service, Esther received Good Shepherd Hospital's MVP Award in Stewardship.
As a member of the Elmhurst University Alumni Association, Esther served on the Alumni Faculty Relationship Committee, represented the Alumni on the sesquicentennial celebration of the College, and took part on the Strategic Plan Committee.
Esther was honored by the Volunteer Center of Greater Barrington and was also inducted into the BACOA Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in recognition of her countless hours of community service. She would always comment that she received more benefits from volunteering than did the organizations she served.
At Esther’s request, visitation and services are private.
Memorials may be made to the Derald M. "Dow" Schultz and Esther A. Schultz Scholarship Fund at Elmhurst University, 190 Prospect Ave., Elmhurst, IL 60126 or a charity of your choice.
