Eugene “Gene” Francis Konaszewski, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 5, 2021 after his brave struggle with dementia made worse by his recent diagnosis of leukemia.
Gene was born on November 29, 1938 in Chicago, IL to Eugene Joseph and Jeanette Mary (Przybylek) Konaszewski. Gene married Jeanette Hansen and together they had three children: Susan, Eugene Jr., and Kenneth.
Gene served in the United States Navy at the Naval Air Station in Glenview as well as being in the reserves. He attended Metropolitan Business College prior to the service, which laid the groundwork for his career at H.D. Catty in Huntley as an accountant and office manager until his early retirement due to medical issues.
Gene loved fishing, especially in Door County, WI, where he created many happy memories. He was also an avid bowler. In fact, it was at Bowl-Hi Lanes in Huntley, IL where he met his future wife, Sandra, and they bowled together for many years. He was a good friend and those that he met were often reminded that he came from “good Polish stock”.
Gene was the beloved husband of Sandra (Guse) Konaszewski for over 50 years; loving father of Eugene Jr. and Kenneth; dear grandfather of James Hook, Amy (Jeremy) Yates, Melissa (Dan) Wurster, Fred (Cambrai) McBride, Felicia (Christopher) Zawada, and Jacob Konaszewski; proud great-grandfather of nine; loving big brother of Antoinette (John) Stockenberg, Janine (Richard) Stevens, Christine (Sherwin) Ruer, and Diane (Sankar) Ray; dear brother-in-law of Sharon (Joseph) Deutsch.
Preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Susan McBride; and grandson, Joshua Konaszewski.
Due to the pandemic, there will be no public visitation. A viewing will be held privately followed by a burial at Windridge Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to JourneyCare Hospice Inc. in Barrington, IL.
