Evelyn J. Ames, 84, born November 20, 1928 in Pt. Allegany, PA passed away in her home February 14, 2013 with family members by her side, joining her husband and lifelong dance partner on Valentine’s Day.
She was preceded in death by William “Bill” T. Ames, her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her sister, Elinor (Willard) Hume of Klamath Falls, OR; two children, Nancy (Richard) Saxton of Algonquin and Judith (Charles) Wooderson of Crystal Lake; two grandchildren, Jessica (Thomas) Craven of Falls Church, VA and Eric (Holly) Saxton of St. Charles; great-grandson Adam Craven and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was the daughter of John K. and Tessie Kearne Zobel. In 1950 she graduated from Niagara University with a BS from the College of Nursing in their first graduating class. Evelyn married her true love July 26, 1952. The couple followed Bill’s career to Louisville, KY, where Nancy was born, and then to Columbus, OH where Judy was born. The next move was to Mount Prospect and eventually to Barrington, their home for more than 40 years.
As a nurse Evelyn worked in OB at NW Community Hospital and ultimately as an office RN for Dr. Lloyd McCarthy and then Dr. Bartolomeo’s family practice in Barrington. She was an active member of the Barrington United Methodist Church and a choir member for over 40 years. She joined the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter KF in 1974, presiding two years as President. Evelyn served as an election judge and hospital volunteer. A dedicated homemaker and professional, she also enjoyed the beach, skiing, traveling, spending time with her family and keeping the cookie jar full.
Evelyn was known for her understated sense of humor, grace and easy smile. To her sister, she was a beloved role model, full of laughter and inspiring accomplishments. To her children, she was an open minded, loyal and encouraging mother. To her grandchildren, she was an example of how to treat people and taught what being a family truly means; traditions, an appreciation of the present, courtesy toward others and love.
