George Thompson

George Elwyn Thompson, longtime resident of Barrington, was born June 6, 1932 in Oak Park to C.E. and Genevieve (nee Kaiser) Thompson. He passed away peacefully at home on June 1, 2016.

Growing up Georgeloved being a part of the bakery and ice cream brand owned by his family. He proudly attended Monmouth College where he was a member of the Fighting Scots football team and the ATO fraternity. He also served in the US military during the Korean War, and had a long career as a stock broker. George was very active in the Barrington Area Lions and Rotary Clubs.

George’s love of history and literature won him many games of Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble. He also enjoyed playing golf and chess. George and his wife, Sharon, were avid travelers having amassed over 30 years of terrific memories. Aside from his family, one of George’s biggest passions was his beloved Cubs. He attended the World Series at Wrigley Field when he was 13 and had high hopes for this year’s team!

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; children, Cathy (Tom) Leahy, Jaini Thompson, George (Jo Anne) Thompson; step-children, Mike (Karen) Schwalbach and John (Shelly) Schwalbach; and grandchildren, Chanel and Ross Doree, Sami Thompson, Mackenzie, Mason, and Karina Schwalbach, who all knew him affectionately as “Pop”.

Visitation will be Saturday, June 4, 2016 from 3 pm until 6 pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 149 W Main St. (Lake-Cook Rd.), Barrington. Visitation will continue from 10:30 AM until the time of Mass at 11 AM on Monday, June 6, at Transfiguration Catholic Church, 316 W Mill St., Wauconda. Burial will follow at Windridge Memorial Park, Cary.
