George Wight, Sr., 86 of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully January 1, 2015 in Crystal Lake.
He was born on June 7, 1928 in Joliet, IL to Raulin and Rose Wight.
Mr. Wight was a graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He expanded the family business from Wight & Company, in Downers Grove and founded Wight Consulting Engineers in Barrington, IL. Wight Consulting assisted with the formation of many notable villages such as Lake in the Hills, Barrington Hills and Lake Zurich. He ran the company for over 50 years before retiring. During that period he was Chairman of Duco Bancshares, a multi-bank holding company, throughout Illinois. Additionally he was a founder of the Midwest College of Engineering. He served on the Illinois Fine Arts Review Board and was a lifelong contributor to the Brookfield Zoo, Art Institute of Chicago and is noted for his contributions to the Rails to Trails program. Mr. Wight served as a member of the Wauconda School Board. He was a private pilot, skier and consummate bicyclist. He and his beloved wife Cathie have cycled in over 8 countries including the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. He was a member of First Congregation Church where he served as a Stephen minister.
George is survived by his wife of 24 years, Cathie Lee; son, George Wight; daughter, Jan Wight; stepson, Jason Klekovic; grandchildren, George Wight XI, and Garrett Wight; and sister Nancy Reimers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Jane; and brother Raulin Wight.
Memorial visitation will be held from 3pm until the time of the memorial service at 7pm, Thursday, January 8 at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave, (Rt. 176) Crystal Lake.
