Gerald J. Bennett, 89, of Marengo, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Centegra Hospital – Woodstock.
He was born July 17, 1925 in Chicago. He served in the US Navy from 1941 – 1946 as an aircraft mechanic. Gerald worked as an electrician for Matthews Company in Crystal Lake.
He cherished spending time with his family and his John Deere tractor was his pride and joy. He enjoyed gardening and his life’s ambition was to grow the perfect tomato.
Gerald is survived by his children, Paulette (Bud) Haas, Rich (Sara Schmelzer) Bennett, and Kathy Bennett; his daughter-in-law, Deborah Bennett; grandchildren, Kelly (John) Bradley, and Claire and Lily Bennett; his sister, Margaret Kesteleyn; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Vernell (nee Burks); his son, Gerald “JB” Bennett; and brothers, Joseph Siggins and Wilson Bennett.
The Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 6 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Avenue, Woodstock, where there will be an hour of visitation at 9:00 a.m. prior to the Mass. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Woodstock.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org, in memory of Vernell would be appreciated.
