It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Gregory Thomas Mularz.
As a proud Crystal Lake South Gator (’96), Greg played varsity hockey and football before pursuing a B.A. in History at the University of Illinois. During his undergraduate career, Greg also exercised his athleticism as a member of the U of I Men’s Club Ice Hockey Team.
Always eager for adventure, Greg later enlisted in the United States Army, where he served with the 172nd Infantry, 1-2 BTN “Black Scarves,” stationed in Grafenwöhr, Germany. Off-duty, he enjoyed all of the best things in life: Long-distance running, authentic Mexican food, and The Grateful Dead.
After a combat tour in Iraq, Greg traded his military career for a medical career, earning an MSW from Southern Illinois University’s School of Social Work. As a proud veteran affairs specialist, he was able to lend a helping hand to his fellow vets, before serving as a drug and alcohol counselor at Rosecrance in Rockford.
Above all else, Greg was known for his kindness. He was a loyal friend to all and a true believer in steadfast compassion. With that, we believe that Greg would want to share how hard he fought to overcome his drug and alcohol addiction—a disease that ultimately took his life—and he would want to encourage those that are fighting to keep fighting.
Greg is survived by his parents, Thomas & Beth of Crystal Lake, IL; his brothers, Michael of Chicago, IL & Thomas (Elizabeth) of La Crescenta, CA; his sisters, Amelia of New York, NY & Marina of Crystal Lake, IL; his nephews William, Miles, & Mason of La Crescenta, CA; his grandparents Stanley & Mary Jo of Davenport, IA; and many friends in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.
Visitation will be Friday, October 23, 2015, from 4 pm – 8 pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E Terra Cotta Ave (Rte 176), Crystal Lake. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 9 am until time of the funeral service at 11 am at the funeral home.
