Gregory A. Schmidt

September 7, 1951 — January 10, 2022

Davenport Lake Zurich

Gregory A. Schmidt, age 70, of Lake Zurich, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 10, 2022.  He was born on September 7, 1951, to George and Dorothy Schmidt.

Greg was born in Oak Park, IL and graduated from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with a BS in electrical engineering. He spent much of his younger days surrounded by cars, amassing an impressive array of awards as an amateur stock car racer. After starting his family in Lake Zurich, he had a long and successful career as an engineer working with major automotive equipment manufacturers, until his retirement in 2020.

Greg was a loving father who enjoyed golfing, fixing cars, trips to Florida with his family, and caring for his cats, Pillsbury and Clint Eastwood. He was a Cubs fan, listening to every game on the radio, and frequently attending games at Wrigley with his children. He loved working on the house and yard, spending time in the garage with his cars, and playing 18 holes with his friends on the weekends. His children will never forget all the memories of family trips to Disney World, time spent on the golf course together, birthday supper club dinners in Wisconsin, Cubs games, summer days in the garage, little league games, road trips, and spending time together on the holidays.

Greg was seldom one to ask for help, but more than willing to give. He would never complain, and it seemed like nothing was too far out of the way for him to want to lend a hand. He was responsible for many fixed cars, cross-country relocations, cat-sitting duties, and home improvements. He would drive 1,000 miles just to help change your tire, or play a round of golf with you, or just say hello. Quiet, stubborn, and caring, he would never demand anything for his time, and devoted all his energy to others. He worked and saved for the benefit of his family, sacrificing his own comfort. His children will be forever grateful for the lives he was able to give them.

He fought to stay with us until the end, and his last words to his family will forever be, “I love you all”.

Greg will be forever missed by his daughter, Miranda; his two sons, Donald and Kenneth; the mother of his children, Lydia; and his brother and sister, Doug and Linda. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dorothy.

Greg will be cremated at Davenport Family Funeral Home in Lake Zurich, IL.  Visitation will take place on Saturday, January 22 from 4pm until the time of his Memorial Service at 7pm. The family requests visitors to dress casually for the services - Cubs gear would be acceptable!

The family would like to thank the compassionate doctors, nurses, and staff at Good Shepherd Hospital, in Barrington, who were with Greg through the end of his fight, as well as all the friends and family who have offered their support during this difficult time.

The family asks that Greg's friends consider making a small charitable contribution in lieu of flowers for the service;  A GoFundMe has been established in Greg's name for the benefit of animal welfare non-profits in the Chicagoland area: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-save-animals-in-memory-of-greg-schmidt?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_campaign=m_pd+share-sheet
