Hazel D Culbertson, 87, of McHenry, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on October 28, 2021. She was born in Evanston IL to Herman and Alma Windelborn on January 16, 1934.
She met her husband, Jim, at an Army social dance in Wilmette IL. They married November 3,1956, in Evanston, and were lovingly together for 64 years. Hazel earned her bachelor’s degree from NIU and was a 3rd grade teacher for several years before raising their four children. She enjoyed being a homemaker. Taking care of her family was a huge priority to her.
Hazel was active with her daughters in Girl Scouts for over 10 years. She was troop leader, cookie cupboard manager and involved in many other leadership roles. She was also a very active and dedicated member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Evanston for over 50 years.
After raising their family and living in Evanston, they moved to McHenry and enjoyed 36 years building part two of a wonderful life. She was a supportive wife, mom and grandma in different roles in Cub Scouts, Boy Scout, Girl Scout, School activities, Lions Club activities, election judge, and the family business-Precision Sharpening & Repair.
Hazel was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority-McHenry. She enjoyed her ‘sisters’ friendships and outings together. She was a faithful member and very involved at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in McHenry. She was an active member and leader of the Sewing Circle and the Christmas Craft Bazar committee, as well as bible study and prayer groups. She enjoyed many friendships & fellowship opportunities.
Hazel was a very talented and creative crafter. Her works of knitting, crocheting, sewing and ceramics are treasured gifts she shared with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Hazel is survived by her children, Doug (Terry) Culbertson, Sue Culbertson, Shelly (Rick) Kostner, Bruce (Jennifer Sikorcin) Culbertson; sister-in-law, Lois McDonough; grandchildren, Damon Culbertson, Nick (Megan) Kostner, Jessica (Pat) Reed, Caroline Culbertson, Ryan Kostner, Simon Culbertson and Tim Culbertson; great grandchildren, Nina, Meika, Lincoln, James, Anya, Clark, Marshall and Andrew; her sweet cousin, Joy Harrison; and many special nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends.
A visitation will be held at Davenport Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 from 4pm until the time of a service at 7pm. Burial will be private.
