Hazel Powell

Hazel Beatrice Hollingsworth Powell, 96, of Woodstock, formerly of rural Barrington, died Tuesday, July 15, 2014, in Woodstock, Illinois.

She was born on September 12, 1917, to George and Lena Hollingsworth in Greenwood, Mississippi. She was a graduate of Millsaps College.

Hazel served in communications as a Navy WAVE during WWII. After spending many years raising her five children, she became an elementary school teacher in Carpentersville. Hazel was a loving, creative mother, an excellent cook, a gifted seamstress, an avid flower gardener, a dedicated wife, a woman of faith, had a gift of hospitality and an unmatched, can-do, positive attitude.

Hazel is survived by her loving children, Nancy (Arthur) Andersen, Lea (Robert) Tonkin, Ted (Rita) Powell, Ellen Anderson and Alice (Rudy) Haefke; grandchildren, Laura (Scott) Miller, Lisa (Kevin) Nelson, Summer Powell, Brittany (Michael) Powell Parich, Ilze Anderson, Ian (Tara) Anderson, Esther Anderson, Beau (Caryn) Haefke, Tabitha Haefke and Jack Haefke; great-grandchildren, Kari, Kirsten and Audrey Miller, Alexis and Katie Countryman, Lilyenne, Madelyne and Vyerra Haefke; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Edward Schuyler Powell; brothers, George, Jack and William Hollingsworth; her parents, and step-father, G. C. Gates.

Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 15 at Hearthstone Village, 840 N. Seminary Avenue, Woodstock, IL 60098.
