Helmut Goettel

Helmut Goettel, 85, of Algonquin, formerly of Crystal Lake, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at his home. He was born August 20, 1931 in Torschau, Yugoslavia to the late Daniel and Eva (Scholl) Goettel.

Helmut had a lifelong love affair with automobiles. He was a master mechanic from Germany, starting his own repair business in Chicago, and ending with the family owned Goettel Motors in Crystal Lake. His hobbies revolved around his family, the family business and automobiles. A friend to all knew him; he will be greatly missed.

Helmut is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sonja (nee Ziegler); his daughters, Beate (Henry) Krepel, and Heidi (Ed) Goodman; five grandchildren, Katrina (Farid), Andrea, Christine (Brian), Eddie (Jackie) and Kyle; younger brother, Othmar (Elisabeth) Goettel; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Helmut was preceded in death by his beloved son, Robert, and brother, Gerhard.

Visitation will be on Sunday, September 11, from 2pm until 6pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E Terra Cotta Ave (Rte 176), Crystal Lake. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Monday morning, September 12, from 10am until the time of a service at 11am. Burial will follow at Crystal Lake Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up. Donations can be directed to a family member.
