Howard Raymond Carley III, age 74, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on September 14, 2021 after his hard and courageous fight with cancer.
Howard graduated from Metropolitan State University with a degree in English and Secondary Education and a Minor in Psychology. He then received his Graduate Degree in English from DePaul University Chicago. Early in his career Howard worked as a High School English teacher and later worked as an Account Specialist for Metro Premium Wines. Howard spent the vast majority of his career as “Coach Carley” as a USTPA Certified Tennis Professional. He coached many elite boys and girls high school and college tennis players at the following schools: Stevenson (10 years), Jacobs (2 years), Buffalo Grove (3 years), Latin (12 years), Streamwood (1 year) and Concordia University-Chicago (3 years), leading them to many victories and titles. In his spare time, Howard loved playing tennis, spending time with his grandchildren, reading, traveling and skiing. He especially enjoyed a great bottle of wine and a nice meal with friends and family. Howard will be deeply missed by his friends, his family and all who knew him.
Howard is survived by his daughter, Darby Hills and his son-in-law Tom Hills; his son, Zachary Carley and his daughter-in-law, Stephanie Carley; his ex-wife, Gayle Carley; his 5 grandchildren, Madeline, Tommy and Jack Hills and Parker and David Carley; and his two sisters Charlotte Carley and Ann Hoover.
Howard is predeceased by his parents Howard and Grace Carley; his nephew, Eric Hoover, his in-laws, Eunice and Neale Gripentrog; his brother-in-law, Gregory Gripentrog; and Kristen Cavalier.
A visitation for Howard will be held from 4pm until 8pm on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 149 West Main Street, Barrington, IL 60010. A second visitation will be held at the funeral home the following morning from 9am until the time of service at 10am. Burial to follow at Crystal Lake Memorial Park in Crystal Lake, IL.
