Crystal Lake, Illinois,Hubert J. ""Herb"" Marshall, 87, of Crystal Lake, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 at Centegra Hospital in McHenry surrounded by loved ones. He was born on April 29, 1923 in Monroe, Iowa, a rural farming community, as the eldest son of Hubert and Flossie Marshall. He married Betty Jean Frey on Nov. 19, 1950 and together they had recently celebrated their 60 year wedding anniversary. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the European Theater during World War II. Herb moved his family to Crystal Lake in 1972, and retired from Motorola in Schaumburg in 1989, after 25 years working in facilities planning and acquisition. Prior to that he was a radio engineer and on-air personality at KSMN radio in Mason City, IA which is where he met his wife Betty in 1948. A Monroe High School (IA) graduate in 1942, he also attended engineering school at the University of Toledo in Ohio. His hobbies included bicycling, machining, woodworking and small engine repair, crafting skills that he also used later in life assembling furniture at Unfinished Furniture in West Dundee and also repairing and refurbishing lawnmowers, snowblowers and bicycles for neighbors in his Coventry subdivision in Crystal Lake. He was a fan of all Chicago sports teams and he remained vibrant and active, often bicycling up to 5 miles per day and also doing yardwork. He is survived by his beloved wife Betty Marshall of 60 years; his loving sons, Craig Marshall of Lake in the Hills and Todd (Cheryl) Marshall of Tower Lakes; and grandchildren, Megan Marshall of Woodstock, Erin Marshall of Woodstock and Kelly (Peter) Edson of Carpentersville, from whom he recently became a great-grandfather on Nov. 27, 2010 with the birth of their son, Alexander David Edson. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul Marshall of Storm Lake, IA; sister, Catharine Johnson of Otley, IA; and two sons, Brian, in 2006 and David, in 2007. Visitation will be from Friday, December 10,2010, from 3 p.m. until the time of funeral service at 7 p.m., at the Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176), Crystal Lake. Interment will be private.
