Jack Train, 91, passed away at home in Barrington, Monday, March 17, 2014, in the presence of loving family.
He was born in southern Illinois to the late Cyril and Yuba Train on April 8, 1922.
Jack attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, graduating with a degree in architecture and structural engineering. Upon graduation, he served from 194446 as an officer in the Navy, stationed in the South Pacific.
After returning from service in World War II, he began his career as a Chicago architect that spanned 51 years, first with Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, where two of his most significant projects included the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and the Inland Steel building in Chicago, to his most recent partnership in the Chicago firm of Valerio Dewalt Train Associates. Jack was dedicated to the profession, as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, serving on numerous AIA committees, and as the recipient of the coveted Edward C. Kemper award for his significant contributions to the Institute. He is the author of the book, The Unsung Essentials of Architecture, which focuses on the business of architecture.
Jack was grateful for his experiences in Boy Scouts, first as an Eagle Scout, and later as a scoutmaster. He remained active in the Presbyterian Church of Barrington where he was a founding charter member. He was a long-time member of the Barrington Hills Country Club, a Rotarian, and was involved with various boards and committees for the township of Barrington and Barrington Hills. Jack was an avid golfer, tennis player, and swimmer.
Jack is survived by family who loved him deeply - his wife of almost 70 years, Virginia; his children Jack, Barbara and Pamela; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will take place at 2p.m., Saturday, April 12, at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington, 6 Brinker Road, Barrington Hills, IL 60010.
