James William Humphrey

James William Humphrey, 92, currently of The Fountains of Crystal Lake, passed away on July 10, 2023.   He was born in Detroit, MI on December 29, 1930, to Edward and Lucille (Bolle) Humphrey.

A veteran of the Navy, Jim proudly served in the Korean War.  He graduated from Northwestern University, with a Master’s Degree and had a fulfilling career as a Certified Public Accountant for over 58 years.  Jim also taught auditing at Northwestern at night for many years.

On New Year’s Eve, 1956, he met the love of his life, Arlene Sutter, on a blind date.  They were married in 1958 and celebrated their 65th anniversary in April.

Together, they raised their family in Chicago and later moved to Park Ridge.   Jim enjoyed commuting to the city, gardening, making jigsaw puzzles, watching Cubs games and all things Chicago. He was also very active in his churches throughout the years.

Jim leaves behind his loving wife, Arlene; children, Karen (Douglas) Puenner and David (Patricia Tlapek) Humphrey; grandchildren, Ashley Puenner, Andrew Humphrey, Christopher Puenner, and Jennifer (Sasha) Collins; and sister, Valerie Pollack.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Edward Humphrey Jr., Judith Harper, Mary Chester, and Steven Humphrey; and his grandson, Nicholas Puenner.

A visitation will be held on Friday, July 21, from 10am until a service at 12 noon at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.

The Humphrey family would like to extend a warm thank you to the community and staff at The Fountains for being such a wonderful place to live the past five years along with the staff of JourneyCare for taking such good care of Jim since February.  They also want to thank his caregiver Marjorie and the In-Home staff for her outstanding & loving care for Jim.
