James Walter Johnson, Sr., 87, of Crystal Lake passed away Sunday, January 29, 2012 at his home.
He was born December 14, 1924 in Stockholm, Sweden to the late Ivar and Irma (nee Skoglund) Johnson. The Johnsons immigrated to the United States in 1928 and settled in Brooklyn, NY. He married his wife of 53 years, Barbro (nee Strandh) after meeting her at the Scandinavian Club in Brooklyn, NY.
James retired from Zurich American Insurance Company in 1990. He served in the Air force and Navy Reserves for 30 years and was stationed in Cuba in 1961. James was the past post commander of the Crystal Lake VFW. He enjoyed a lifetime of music and played the guitar and accordion. James was a stamp collector and enjoyed tinkering around the house.
In addition to his wife, Barbro, he is survived by his children, Randy (Mary Beth) Johnson of Austin, TX, Linnea (Jeff) Lynch of West Chicago, James Jr. (Rebecca) of McHenry, and Lillian (James) Dougherty of California; grandchildren, Evan, Keri, Tori, Nicole, Jimmie, Jonnie, TJ, Kelly and Berit; and great-grandson, Elijah.
The visitation will be Thursday, February 2 from 3 pm until the time of service at 7 pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176), Crystal Lake.
