Jane Goodman, age 91, an Evanston resident for 45 years, died on April 23. After she graduated from Manley High School in Chicago at the top of her class, her parents discouraged her from attending college. Determined to further her education, she began taking college courses on television when her children were young, eventually earning a bachelor's degree from St. Xavier University, and a Ph.D. in speech pathology from Northwestern University. Jane worked for many years as a speech pathologist in the Evanston schools, and eventually developed a private practice in which, among other things, she worked with foreigners to improve their spoken English. Her clients included executives of Motorola Corporation, and many diplomats posted at foreign government consulates in Chicago. She taught at Oakton Community College for many years, and she was an active member of the American Speech and Hearing Association until she was 89. Jane enjoyed theater, and was for several years a member of the Open Door Players, a senior citizens theater troupe sponsored by the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie. She was also a patron of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Jane was married for 49 years to Harold S. Goodman, who died in 1996. She leaves behind her two sons, Bill Goodman (Victoria Belco) of Berkeley, California, Bruce Goodman (Patti Pokorski)of Barrington; four grandchildren, Tony Goodman (Lindy Gomez) of Los Angeles, Emily(Lance) Erickson of Minneapolis, Nick Goodman of Chicago, and Teresa Goodman of San Francisco; a sister, Ruth (Sid) Grubman of Palm Desert, California; a niece, Judy(David) Frith-Smith of Calabasas, California; and a nephew, Rick (Virginia) Cooper.
She also leaves behind a soon-to-be-born great grandson, who may or may not be named Tiger Erickson. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to The Arthritis Foundation or the American Heart Association.
