James “Jay” N. Hopman, Jr., 68, passed away on Monday, December 17, 2018 after a short, but tough battle with ALS at JourneyCare in Barrington, Illinois.
Jay was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 4, 1950 to James and Beatrice Hopman. Jay attended Leo High School and was an Evans Scholar at Purdue University, graduating in 1972. Jay was a proud union member of Local 399, working at University of Illinois at Chicago for 30 years. Jay was a true Mr. Fix-It, a lover of classic rock, motorcycles and boats, and an avid sports fan of whatever sports his children or grandchildren played.
Jay was the beloved husband to Patricia and father to Joyce (Edward) Richardson and Brian (Candice) Hopman, and loving “Pa” to Ian Richardson, Peyton Richardson, McKenna Richardson, Calvin Hopman, and Breck Hopman. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sisters, Margaret (Patrick) Burke, Mary (Steve) Rowe, Catherine (William) Kushner, brother, Michael (Sherri) Hopman, sister-in-law, Susan Hopman, aunt, Sister Ann O’Hara, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas Hopman; nephew, Sean Hopman; and several aunts and uncles.
Visitation is scheduled on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake, IL from 3-8pm. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 1023 McHenry Ave. Crystal Lake, IL at 10AM.
