Jean (Dockery) Harvey

W. Jean Harvey (née Dockery) died peacefully on Friday, July 28, 2017, in Crystal Lake, IL, at the age of 91.

Jean is survived by her son Hank (Bridget) Harvey of Cary, IL; grandchildren Lori Harvey of Elmhurst, IL, James (Donna) Harvey of Elmhurst, IL, Roland (Donna) Harvey of Byron, IL, Franklin (Kellie) Harvey of North Aurora, IL, Tammie (Michael) McCauley of Plainfield, IL, and Hannah Harvey, Hayden Harvey, and Heaton Harvey all of Cary, IL; great-grandchildren Andrew Crounk, Jacob Crounk, Jimmy (Vanessa) Harvey, Taylor Harvey, Catie Harvey, Maddie Harvey, Brenden Harvey, Dylan Harvey, Ryan Harvey, Keegan McCauley, Rylie McCauley, and Shelby McCauley; and sisters Janell Sherrill of Fredonia, KY, and Darlene Henry, of Princeton, KY, as well as numerous nieces and nephews  too many to list but still very important and close to her heart.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents Henry W. Dockery and Mamie Riley, siblings Katherine, Robert, Ruth, William, Martha, Roland, and Henry A., husband James Ellis Harvey II,  sons James Ellis Harvey III and Michael Roland Harvey, and grandson Thomas Michael Harvey.

Jean Harvey was born on August 12, 1925, in Providence, KY, to Henry Wesley Dockery and Mamie B. Dockery (née Simmons). She married Jim Harvey at the end of World War II on June 11, 1946.  Due to an accident when she was in high school, doctors informed her that she should never have children.  In true form, Jean showed that she could do anything she set her mind to, and they welcomed first son James Ellis III in 1948 while living in Evansville, IN.  After moving to Chicago, IL, they welcomed second son Michael Roland in 1952.  In 1957, they moved to her beloved house in Villa Park, IL.  In 1968, they welcomed youngest son Henry John (Hank).  Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor and friend to so many people.

Jean had a strong faith in Jesus, having grown up between living with her father, Henry Wesley, who was a Southern Baptist circuit preacher in rural western Kentucky, her mother Mamie Riley in Chicago, IL, and her older sisters in Madisonville, KY.  To the end of her life, Jean was a woman devoted to reading her Bible and praying for her family.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 1, from 4 until 8 pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, Crystal Lake.  Visitation will continue at the funeral home Wednesday morning, August 2, from 9 am until the time of a funeral service at 10 am.  Burial will follow at Ridgewood Memorial Park in Des Plaines.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jean’s name may be made to Samaritan’s Purse.  The family would like to thank the care givers in Reminiscence at Sunrise Senior Living in Crystal Lake and the staff of Journey Care Hospice for their efforts in making Jean’s last days as comfortable and peaceful as possible.
