Jean Elizabeth Oberg (nee Griffiths), 90, a resident of Crystal Lake since 1961, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2012 at The Fountains of Crystal Lake.
She was born April 5, 1922 in Fulton, New York to the late David and Elizabeth (nee Howard) Griffiths. She married the late Richard Oberg on December 23, 1944 in Chicago. He preceded her in death on May 12, 1994.
Jean served as a Navy Yeoman Third Class in Washington D.C. during World War II. After the war she lived in Chicago and Mount Prospect before moving to Crystal Lake.
Jean worked as a dental assistant in Crystal Lake for over 40 years for Dr. Donald Brandeau and Dr. Timothy Sullivan. She loved her job and co-workers, but finally decided to retire at the age of 85.
Jean was a member of and volunteer at the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake. She also did volunteer work as a driver for many years for Faith in Action McHenry County.
More than anything, Jean loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed music, theater, and gardening. She was a gentle, kind and caring person who valued her many friendships. She always looked for ways to help or show love and appreciation to others. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and co-workers.
Jean is survived by her children, Dr. Gary Oberg, Melodee (Wayne) Markee, and Dean (Carol) Oberg; grandchildren, Tyler (Michelle) and Brennan (Cindy) Markee, and Leatha and Ryan Oberg; step-grandsons, Jay and Douglas Holliman; great-grandchildren, Brianne, Kennedy, and Owen Markee and Trevor Santiago Oberg; step-great grandchildren, Paige, Kyan, Jay Jr., and Raven Holliman; her sister, Irene Blake; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Jean was preceded in death by her siblings, Marie (John) Jacoby and John (Mary) Griffiths and her brother-in-law, Donald Blake.
A memorial visitation will be Wednesday, May 16 from 1 p.m. until the time of memorial service at 3 p.m. at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176), Crystal Lake. Interment will be private.
