Joan Barth Enggaard, of Barrington, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly in June of 2011. Born in Reading, PA, Joan was the daughter of Ernest L. Barth and Francies White Barth. She graduated with honors from Mount Penn High School in 1947 and attended Syracuse University’s School of Nursing, graduating with a B.S. degree and R.N. in 1951. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, John P. Enggaard, and her youngest son, Paul D. Enggaard, who passed away in 1989.
Joan was a well-respected and popular assistant professor of nursing at the College of Lake County for 17 years. She received a Masters in Nursing, also from Syracuse University, in 1974. As an early supporter of the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study, she received a certificate of achievement for over 20 years of supportive participation. In addition to a rewarding teaching career, she was a member of the Good Shepard Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer computer instructor for SeniorNet of Palatine.
In the summers, Joan enjoyed golfing at Cary Country Club with her husband and played in many tournaments with their friends. She also looked forward to spending several weeks in Cancun, Mexico, re-uniting there with family members at Christmas. She and John enjoyed 30 years of their timeshare on the beach. Joan relished her role as grandmother to Bryan and Parker Betz, children of her daughter, Patricia Betz (David) of Mill Creek, WA. She is also survived by a son, John Jr. (Debbie) of Baltimore, a sister, Merilee’s Mount, of Wernersville, PA and a sister, Agnes Jones, of San Diego, CA. Joan is dearly missed by all who were touched by her tremendous wisdom, good humor and loving kindness.
