**Service information update

** A Celebration of Life will be held at Salem United Methodist Church in Barrington.  Visitation will be at 10am until the service at 11am Saturday November 13, 2021.  Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.**

John A. Benson, age 75, passed away on April 29, 2020 at Good Shepard Hospital at Barrington, Illinois.  John was born July 12, 1944 to the late Anton Fredrick and Hazel S. Benson (nee Schlorff).

John was a member of the Barrington High School class of 1962. After high school, John joined the U.S. Navy, from 1963 to 1967, honorably serving his country.  His basic training was in Bainbridge, Maryland.  He was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina aboard the USS Macdonough.

John was a Roofing contractor for many years. John was also a custodian for the Barrington School District working primarily at the Barrington Prairie Grade School until retirement.  He grew up and called Barrington “home” for many years before moving to Lake Zurich, Illinois. John’s pride and joy was his perfectly manicured lawn, and was greatly admired by his many neighbors. He enjoyed reading and spending time with friends and family.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of John include his sister, Marilyn Cheatham; brother-in-law, Marvin Marquardt; cousins, Marie Melahn, Evelyn Conro, Florence Wenzel, and George Wendt; second cousins, Ora Lee Melahn and Kay Ann Fox; nieces, Lois Casper, Judy Smith, Kathy, Deb, Sheryl, and Sandra Cheatham; and nephews, Don Adams, Ronald Marquardt, Tom Jr., Bill, Mark, and Scott Cheatham. He will also be missed by 18 great nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors, and his beloved dog, Murphy.

John was preceded in death by both his parents; aunts, Ora Hansen, Ella Nelson, Mabel Wendt; and uncle Lawrence Schlorff; sister, Jean Marquardt; cousins, Richard and Ralph Hansen, Dan Wenzel, Roger Wendt, and Steve Melahn; brother-in-law, Tom Cheatham, Sr.; and nephew, Steven Adams.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in John’s memory to The American Heart Association, www.heart.org/donate ; The American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org/donate ; and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org/donate . A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be scheduled at a later date.  Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Barrington, Illinois.
