John Holsten

November 24, 1925 — April 20, 2015

CRYSTAL LAKE—John P. Holsten, 89, of Crystal Lake, died Monday, April 20, 2015, at Centegra Hospital, McHenry.

He was born November 24, 1925, in Chicago, to Peter and Kathrina (nee Beckmann) Holsten. John married Annie Tietjen on October 23, 1948, in Crystal Lake.

He attended Steinmetz High School and served in the Army Air Force during World War II in the Philippines and Japan. John went on to become a long-time businessman in Crystal Lake operating Holsten’s Gulf and Holsten’s Sunoco service stations and later Holsten’s Automotive. He was a member of the Crystal Lake Volunteer Fire Department for nine years and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Holsten; daughter, Shirley (Don) Freese of Chesterton, IN; son, Jim (JoAnn) Holsten of Crystal Lake; five grandchildren, Rebecca (Larry) Nakamura of Hermosa Beach, CA, Rachel (Mike) Nicholson of Zionsville, IN; Jessica (Derek) Loverich of Poplar Grove, and Leah and Tori Holsten of Crystal Lake; and four great-grandchildren, Calista and Dryden Nicholson and Matthew and Natalie Loverich.

The visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Thursday, April 23, at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176), Crystal Lake. There will also be visitation Friday, April 24, from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 11 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Historic Church, 178 W. McHenry Ave., Crystal Lake. Burial will follow in Windridge Memorial Park, Cary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in John’s name may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Altar Guild, 300 S. Pathway Ct., Crystal Lake, IL 60014.
