John King, age 86, of Barrington, IL died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on October 19, 2021. Born and raised in County Clare, Ireland, John was the sixth of ten children born to loving parents, Michael and Margaret.
He started working at a young age, helping on the family farm and immigrated to Chicago in 1954. There, he learned the carpentry trade from his brother, building garages throughout the south and west suburbs. John went on to start his own building business, developing subdivisions primarily in Berkeley, Woodstock and Ingleside, Illinois. His high quality workmanship, practical style of building and generous spirit helped many families into their dream homes. A great storyteller, he loved to make people laugh and his own laugh was sometimes better than the punchline. In retirement, he became an avid golfer and reader of historical non-fiction. He always put his family first, instilling work ethic, faith and deep appreciation for education.
John is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Ellen (nee Liston); loving children, Therese (James) Fauerbach, Mary Ellen (Maurice) McGrath, Geraldine King, Sheila (John) Spiezio, Eileen (William) Bower, Margaret (Stephen) Schumacher, Kathleen King, Michael (Mary Kate), and Joan (Eric) Maloney; cherished grandchildren, John, Katie, Colleen, Erin (Victor) Szeligowski, Emmett (Allison), Ellie, Joseph, Caroline, John, Daniel, Kelly (Matthew) Hilowitz, Michael, Liam, Maeve, Patrick, Michael, Aidan, Anna Mae, Keira, Owen, Nellie, Michael, and Nora; great-grandchild, Sarah Ellen; fond siblings, Michael (Rose), Ann (John) Healy, and Teresa Duffy; as well as many nieces, nephews, godchildren, friends and neighbors.
