John “Jack” Marsland, 88 of Algonquin and formerly of Palatine, passed away at home on February 8, 2016.
"There is nothing in the world as irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor". Jack was gifted with both and shared them freely. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather; he will be deeply missed by his children Jennie (Joe Murphy), Kate (Alan Harkrader) and Charlie (Ann); two grandsons, Matthew and Max; his sister Joan Jewell and his in-laws, Lorinda and John Bradford. In his final years, Jack was also loved and cared for by his personal aides, Marilyn Villarama, Diane Kaufmann and Toni Villarama.
Jack cherished his family and friends and was a dedicated volunteer for the Friends of the Algonquin Area Library for many years. He was a life-long soccer fan, and an early president and coach of the Palatine Celtic Soccer Club. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Jack graduated from Wesleyan University and was an Army veteran. He met the love of his life, Ann Ocheltree, in New York in 1955 and they were married for 57 years.
A reception honoring Jack will be held at a future date; please e-mail murphyaj315@gmail.com or kmmarsland@comcast.net for details. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Friends of the Algonquin Area Library.
