John J. Meehan, 68, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at Condell Hospital in Libertyville, IL after a long illness.  He was born in Chicago, IL at Our Lady of the Angels Orphanage on March 21, 1951 and was adopted as a baby by his late parents, Leo Meehan and Margaret (Peg) Rooney Meehan.  He is survived by his daughter, Jenna A. Meehan Laster (Willard “Steve” Laster III), living in the Northwest suburban Chicago area; his stepson Justin L. (Katherine) Ross D.C. of the Louisville, KY area; and Jean Ross Meehan, lifelong friend and wife for 20 years, also residing in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago.

John is also survived by his two sisters, Jane Meehan (Larry) Kracke of Jackson, MO; and Sarah Meehan of Chicago who mourn his loss as their only brother.

John was a colorful character with an irreverent sense of humor and big heart.  He loved any kind of machine that moved, particularly steam trains, motorcycles, race cars and tractors.  Chasing trains was a passion of his younger years, and collecting scale replicas of classic steam followed after that.

He worked at a variety of occupations, but spent the majority of his working years driving straight trucks, school buses and farm equipment; and many years at Lake Zurich schools and Palatine Park District as groundskeeper and equipment operator.  He enjoyed his work, and took pride in being a professional driver and groundskeeper.  He retired in 2012.

There will be no services in accordance with his wishes; and a later private memorial will be planned in the summer as John desired.
