John Spurgeon

November 26, 1939 — December 22, 2014


John Edward Spurgeon of the Village of Lakewood, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on December 22, 2014, after a long illness. Beloved husband of Martha Rose Williams and devoted stepfather of Barbara Krause of Oak Park, Illinois, and Mary (Michael) Tsao of San Mateo, California. Loving father of Karen (Douglas) Connor of Lawrence, Kansas, from his first marriage to Carole LaWall (Scott) McNeese. Cherished grandfather of Trevor, Jessica, and Henry Krause; Emily, Thomas, and Catherine Tsao; and Jimmy and Violette Connor. Dear brother of Dr. Charles (Marilyn) Spurgeon of Berne, Indiana, and uncle of Dr. Pamela (Dallas) Peak of Franklin, Indiana, and Ms. Dacotah Spurgeon of Spokane, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Hobart Spurgeon and Edna Estella Nussbaum Spurgeon, step-mother Mary Ruth Smith Spurgeon, and oldest brother, William Spurgeon.

John was an Air Force veteran and had a long career as a construction project manager and then as a municipal building official in Goodlettsville and Portland, Tennessee, and Bensenville and Rochelle, Illinois. He also worked for B&F Technical Code Services, Hoffman Estates. John was a Certified Building Official (CBO) and Master Code Professional (MCP) and sat on the Village of Lakewood Board of Zoning Appeals.

John was a life member of Mensa and an enthusiastic walker in American Volkssport Association events. He will be missed for his humor, enthusiasm, and insight. To quote his favorite author, George Orwell, "We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness."

Services for John will be held privately.
Inurnment will take place privately at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, Illinois.
