Josef Johann Schmidt

Josef J. Schmidt, age 78, passed away on Sunday August 8, 2021 after a long battle with COVID-19 and other underlying health issues.

Josef was born in Germany and immigrated to the U.S. when he was 14. He was a kind man with a very big heart. He met his wife while at work and they were married in Chicago. Eventually, they settled in rural Woodstock where they could have more land to raise their children. Josef had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved his children and grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. He became interested in machining at a young age and worked his way up to General Manager in Field Machining. He could fix anything. He traveled frequently for work and loved seeing new places. He had a passion for the outdoors, including fishing and hunting. He will be so deeply missed by his family.

Survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Sandra Schmidt (nee Hahn); children, Angela Hammerl, Michelle (Greg) Pourchot, Christopher (Kari) Schmidt, Randall Schmidt; grandchildren, Christian (Molly) Hammerl, Sarah Hammerl, Benjamin (Brittney) Pourchot and Zachary Pourchot; siblings, Regina (Hans) Stierle, Reinhold (Judith) Stickel; niece, Barbara Wagner.

Preceded in death by his father, Johann Schmidt and mother Klara Stickel; stepfather, Christof Stickel; and sister, Barbara Schmidt. A visitation for Josef will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2021, from 3pm until 7pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Rte. 176), Crystal Lake, IL 60014. There will be a funeral service at 10am on Friday, August 13th at the funeral home. Burial to follow at Windridge Memorial Park in Cary, IL.
