Josephine Bernero

Josephine Bernero, 88, of Evanston passed away peacefully on June 1, 2019. She was born on January 10, 1931 in Chicago to the late Joseph and Mary (nee DiPasquale) LoScalzo.

Josephine was an avid reader and life-long student of world culture, global politics, classic history and the arts. She proudly celebrated her Italian heritage every chance she got, which included a solo trip to Sicily at age 80. She enjoyed baking and cooking, participating in cultural and community events at nearby Northwestern University, and attending the opera and the symphony. Most recently, she enjoyed the company of family, laughing, and sharing joyful memories.

Josephine will be deeply missed by her loving children, Susan (Terry) Mertens and Frank (June) Bernero; grandchildren, Terry Jr. (Geri) and AmySue Mertens, and Grant Bernero; and great-grandsons, Harrison Detroy and Parker Mertens. Many loving nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her infant great-grandsons, Troy and Wes Mertens.

Memorial visitation will be Wednesday, June 12, from 5 PM until 8 PM at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Old Rand Rd., Lake Zurich, IL 60047.
