Judith was born in Chicago on September 4, 1938 and grew up in Hyde Park. She attended Grinnell College in Iowa, where she met her future husband, the late Judson Stone. They were married in Chicago in 1960 and moved to Ann Arbor, MI, where they both earned master’s degrees in social work from the University of Michigan. She then began her career, working at University of Michigan’s Center for Population Planning and as director of the Interdisciplinary Project on Child Abuse and Neglect at the University of Michigan Hospital
In 1981, they moved back to Illinois and Judith began 35 years of volunteer work at various local agencies. During that time, she served on the boards of Barrington Youth and Family Service and Friends of Home of the Sparrow, including stints as president of both boards – simultaneously. She also volunteered for nearly 15 years at Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois, where she was honored with the agency’s Commitment to Caring Award in 2004. In the late 1990s, she served on the Village of Barrington Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) subcommittee, helping the Village ensure that its facilities were accessible to the disabled. That work arose from her own experience, having been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1964, she was acutely aware of the challenges of navigating the world in a wheelchair. But as all who knew her would attest, her disability neither deterred her nor defined her. She lived her very full life on her very own terms.
Judith passed away June 9, 2018 in Barrington. Judith is survived by her children, David (Christina) Stone and Ian (Jill) Stone; grandchildren, Zoe, Annie, Sydney, and Isaac Stone; and brother, Scott Bourne. She was preceded in death by her husband, (Judson); sister Claudia Farrell, and her parents, Archibald and Martha Bourne.
