Julia S. Rock passed away April 6, 2015 in Lake Barrington, IL at the age of 95. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Barrington Hills, on Sunday, May 17 at 1:00 pm.
Julia Hatfield Sefing was born March 30, 1920 in Detroit, MI. In 1941, she graduated from Cedar Crest College and, in 1942, married the late Philip A. Rock.
Julia and her husband were very active in the community, as members of the Barrington Area Historical Society, the Barrington Area Library and St. Mark’s Church. Julia was also active in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Julia was a Girl Scout since the age of 10. After college she was a Girl Scout executive in Buffalo, NY. Julia was a scout leader and volunteer and in 2010 received an 80-year pin. In 2012 she was honored at a Girl Scouts 100th anniversary celebration and donated a large collection of memorabilia. In 1998, she was inducted into the Senior Citizen Hall of Fame of the Barrington Area Council on Aging. A music lover, she played violin and piano.
Survivors include her sister, Anne Sefing Carthy, of Monroe Township, NJ; sons Philip, Frederick, and Lawrence, daughter Joyce Rice, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations in memory of Julia Rock can be made to Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois at www.girlscoutsni.org/give or mail to: 12N124 Coombs Road, Elgin, IL 60124. All proceeds will be used to send girls to Girl Scout camp this summer.
