Kimberly Ann Braid, age 51, of Round Lake, IL passed on Tuesday, February 1, 2022.
Kim was born in Cleveland, OH on February 8, 1970. She first contracted rhabdomyosarcoma on her leg at age 16. She was given less than 10% chance for survival. The cancer had spread to her lungs and strong protocols were ordered.
She fought for over 3 years, graduated high school and college but survived. She worked with children with psychiatric and physical disorders to give back and help others.
Kim married but could not have any children due to the heavy chemotherapy treatments. Because of the latent effects of the radiation treatments, she contracted breast cancer twice. On the third reoccurrence she had a double mastectomy.
Kim wanted to adopt, so they contacted a ministry in Nicaragua where they adopted a sweet baby boy, Mason.
A few years later, they were contacted again offering an abandoned baby girl (Marielle) and her 2 year old brother (Brody). This time the adoption process lasted 14 months, at the end of which she was hospitalized with heart failure and a serious cough. After returning home, she developed pneumonia and was placed on oxygen for two years.
The pandemic had slowed the process to discover that she needed a double lung transplant. Being in the Loyola University Medical Hospital MICU since mid-May of 2021 had placed a strain on her body as she needed to gain weight and gain strength. Kim was finally put on a ventilator with a tracheotomy while waiting for a healthy pair of lungs to match her diminutive size and blood type.
Kim finally received a pair of lungs On December 31, 2021. It appeared that she was responding well until a massive brain hemorrhage struck her on January 31. On February 1, 2022, Kim made her final journey into the arms of our Lord in the presence of her immediate family and many doctors and nurses who had been touched by Kim’s strength and kindness.
Kimberly is survived by her beloved husband of 24 years, Peter Braid; her cherished children, Mason, Brody, and Marielle; her loving parents, Linda and Guy Avellon; siblings, Kelley (Andrew) Bevington-Burch and Guy (Fiancee Amanda Baker) Avellon Jr.; and Aunt Diane Buck.
A visitation for Kimberly will be held from 10am until the time of service at 11am on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Old Rand Rd., Lake Zurich, IL 60047.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the family to help contribute Mason, Brody, and Marielle’s college fund.
