Louis K. Gaffney, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his cherished family on May 18, 2021 at the age of 86. He was born on March 14, 1935 in Springfield, IL to Charles B. and Elizabeth (nee Murphy) Gaffney.
On May 19, 1962 he married the love of his life, Kathleen Brown at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Springfield, IL. They then created a loving home to 5 children and were blessed with 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Louis was a man of service; serving in the National Guard for 3 years, and the U.S. Navy for 2 years aboard the U.S.S. Newport News. He was a life-long Roman Catholic and member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church for 42 years, serving the Knights of Columbus Council #10678 as a Grand Knight and Knight in the 4th Degree. He served on church and school associations and coached soccer, baseball, softball and football. Louis earned his Master’s Degree from Loyola University. He began his career with the Social Security Administration then went on to retire in 1997 after 33 years with Motorola Inc.
Louis enjoyed traveling and cruising with his wife and vacationing with his family. He loved to golf but his favorite times were spent attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and musical productions and cheering them on as their number 1 fan. He was an avid Marian Central football fan for years and never missed a game when his sons, Kevin and Sean played.
Louis will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Kathleen; loving children, Kara (Bryon) Congine, Kendahl (Jeffrey) O’Hara, Krista (Greg) Conrad, Kevin (Shawna) Gaffney and Kenneth Sean (Alejandra) Gaffney; grandchildren, Ali, Max, Caz and Gavin Plonczynski, Jake, Riley, Emma, Bowen and Murphy O’Hara, Quinten and Ella Conrad, Persi and Declan Gaffney, Kenneth Sean “KJ” Gaffney; and great-grandchildren, Ryder and Zoey Ortiz; his brother, H.L. “Larry” (Janet) Gaffney of Springfield, IL ; and sisters-in-law, Virginia Gaffney of Springfield, IL and Theresa Gaffney of Loami, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Joseph, John Robert and Charles Patrick; his daughter, Kathleen and his grandson, Gabriel Conrad.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 23 from 4 PM until 8 PM with a prayer service beginning at 7 PM at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Rte. 176), Crystal Lake, IL 60014. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, May 24 at 10:30 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 1023 McHenry Ave, Crystal Lake. All are invited to go directly to church on Monday. Burial to follow at Windridge Memorial Park, Cary.
