Lowell E. Ackmann, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 16, 2015, at his home in the Garlands in Barrington, IL. He was the youngest of three children born on July 2, 1923, to loving parents Henry and Mathilda (nee Rineck) Ackmann in Huntley, IL. He attended the University of Illinois in Champaign under the Navy V12 Program and graduated in 1944 with an Electrical Engineering degree and the Bronze Tablet distinction. At Illinois, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Collier, and they recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Following college Lowell spent 2 years in the Navy as a senior enlisted officer. In 1946 he began his career in sales with Allis-Chalmers in Peoria, IL. In 1956 he accepted a position with Sargent & Lundy Engineers in Chicago where he retired as Senior Partner in late 1987. He received the ECE Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois College of Engineering in 1979 and the Marcia Peterman ECE Award in 1986 and the Constituent Leadership Award in 1988. After retirement he and Dorothy enjoyed spending winters in Phoenix. In addition to his family and friends, his other interests were golf, handball, travel, skiing, bridge, the Indianapolis 500 and watching sports.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three children, Bob Ackmann (Jan), Lee Ackmann (Jakki) and Barbara Ackmann Peterson; six grandchildren, Tom (Michelle), Scott, Kelly, Noah, Erik and Brad.
He was preceded in his death by his parents Henry and Mathilda and brothers, Harold and Roland.
The family will have a private service at Hampshire Cemeteries.
