Lucy Grimm Lane, 85, passed away peacefully at her home in Crystal Lake, IL on January 4, 2023 surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer.

She will be remembered as the family matriarch and guiding light. Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and devoted friend to so many throughout the community. She was deeply involved in her church, PEO, and community at large and loved by many.

Lucy Jane was born June 8, 1937 at Presbyterian hospital in Chicago, IL to Lucy Ross and Lloyd David Grimm. Lucy and her brother David Ross grew up on a farm in Wapello, IA. She was a graduate from Wapello high school being active in band, theater, basketball, and student government. In 1959 Lucy graduated in Home Economics education from Iowa State University (Ames, IA) where she was a life-long member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the Sigma Alpha Iota honors music fraternity. She was an avid ISU cyclone athletics fan throughout her life.

Lucy was married to the love of her life, John Larry Lane on April 10, 1960 with whom she shared 62 years of love and adventures. They met as teachers together in Downers Grove, IL – the same school and principal where Lucy’s parents had met 25 years earlier. One of their most cherished memories was living on Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior for five summers where Larry served as a park ranger while teaching in Calumet, MI during the school year. In 1964 they settled down in Crystal Lake, IL where they raised three boys, Dave, Jim, and Steve who are fortunate to have been able to experience their love and partake in the
many family adventures over the years.

After retirement, they enjoyed traveling the country in their RV while visiting family and friends and staying active in the community. She treasured all the moments with the kids and grandkids. In their adventures they made it to all 50 states and 48 of them with the RV in tow.

Lucy worked as a substitute teacher and librarian at Husmann elementary school in addition to helping Larry run his field ecology trips every summer. She enjoyed many hobbies including gardening and sewing and was an exceptional cook and baker. Lucy was deeply involved with the Dorcas circle at First United Methodist
Church in Crystal Lake and was a 65-year member of PEO at the local and national level. She was also a long-time volunteer with the McHenry County conservation district and local food pantry.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Lucy Ross and Lloyd David Grimm and brother, David Ross Grimm.

She is survived by her loving husband, Larry Lane; three adoring sons, John David (wife Trish), James William (wife Malu), and Steven Ross; two loving granddaughters, Carly Lane Mohn (husband Cullin) and Lorena Lane and three loving grandsons, Ryan Lane, Sebastian Lane and Jacob Lane. Lucy was the proud and doting great grandmother of Emerson and Archer Mohn. She leaves behind a loving niece, Laurie Phillips and nephew, David (Chip) Grimm.
