Marie Charlotte Abelkis, of Lake in the Hills, was born August 20, 1937 to Julius and Marie (nee Ebel) Drege. She passed away peacefully on Monday, October 12, 2015 in Barrington surrounded by family.
Marlo was born in Worms, Germany. She worked in the hotel and restaurant industry for many years. She was a stewardess on the Germany S.S. Hanseatic cruise liner in 1958. She arrived in New York in 1959 and moved to Chicago. There she met her husband, Alfred Abelkis. They built a house in Morton Grove, IL and had four children. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Marlo loved to travel (the US, Caribbean, Europe and Australia). She enjoyed meeting new people. She would tell her stories to anyone who listen and they often said how much they enjoyed her energy and zest for life.
Marie is survived by her children, Kai K. (Linda) Abelkis, Richard R. (Claire) Abelkis, Desiree D. (Brian) Richardson, and Andre A. (Laura) Abelkis; her grandchildren, Austin, Alexandra, Addison, John, Daven, Emma and Andrew Abelkis, and Noah and Jacob Richardson; her sister, Renate (Horst) Wurker; her sister-in-law, Erika Drege; her two nieces and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Abelkis; her brothers, Kai and Albrecht Drege; and her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on 25 October 2015, at Light of Christ Lutheran Church, 100 Hanson Rd., Algonquin, IL 60102.
