Marie Margaret (Giehrl) Chmiel

Marie Margaret Chmiel, 56, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, passed peacefully at home on October 4, 2021, with her family by her side, after a 2 ½ year battle with cancer.  She was born in Livonia, Michigan, on June 23, 1965, to Alfred and JoAnn (Fischer) Giehrl.

After graduating Ladywood High School in 1983, Marie attended the University of Dayton and then graduated the University of Notre Dame in 1987 with a BBA in Accounting.  She worked at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, then the Chicago Board Options Exchange, and was a Certified Public Accountant.

On August 31, 1991, Marie married Michael Chmiel, then relocated from Chicago to Crystal Lake, where they were blessed with three beautiful children.

In 2004, Marie was elected to the McHenry County Board.  She also served as President of the Notre Dame Club of McHenry County.  She served as a Director and Treasurer for McHenry County PADS, and as a Director for the Family Health Partnership Clinic. Marie volunteered with youth sports programs in McHenry County, including Crystal Lake National Little League and CTW Fastpitch.  Marie also volunteered at St. Thomas the Apostle School, and was an active member of her parish.  She was a strong supporter of her children and their activities, including most recently Dennision Silver Hawks Fastpitch Softball.

Marie will be missed by her husband, Michael; their children, Michael (Madeline Walla), Jacqueline, and Christine; her mother, JoAnn Giehrl; her brother, John (Dianne) Giehrl and their children, Caroline and Catherine; and her sister, Anne Giehrl.  She was preceded in death by her father, Alfred Giehrl.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 7, from 4pm until 9pm, at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.

A visitation will continue on Friday morning at the Funeral Home from 8:30am until prayers at 9:15am, before Mass at 10am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 451 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.  Burial will follow at Crystal Lake Memorial Park.
