Marietta VanWynen, 79, of Crystal Lake, Illinois went home to be with her great Savior, Jesus, on Sunday, December 23, 2012.
She was born on June 17, 1933 in Hudsonville, Michigan. She was married to Philip VanWynen for 55 years and was a mother to three devoted daughters.
Marietta will be remembered for her care and compassion to many people in a variety of ways. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, nurse, educator and volunteer.
Her career began as a nurse (RN) in the hospitals and then expanded as she became a multi-specialized educator. Her work included being a teacher of ESL (English as a Second Language) at Elgin Community College for almost 20 years as well as being a teacher for students with learning disabilities in the schools. She received an RN from Hackley Hospital in 1954, a B.S. in English from Bemidji State University in 1966, and a M.S. in Learning Disabilities from Bemidji State in 1974.
She also served the church faithfully for many years as the wife to Philip who was a pastor. Her hobbies included a passion for reading, music and the beauty of the outdoors.
Marietta is survived by her three daughters, Cathy Wassenar (Ron Wassenar) of Villa Park, Illinois, Cheryl Marshall (Steve Marshall) of Woodstock, Illinois, and Connie Henschel (Tim Henschel) of Franklin, Tennessee. She has 5 grandchildren, Rachel Wassenar, David Wassenar (Sharon Wassenar), Emma, Jonathan and Allison Henschel.
Marietta was preceded in death by her husband, Philip VanWynen, her mother, Marian Lokers and her sister, Barbara Terpstra.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 29, 2012 from 10 am – 1 pm at Davenport Funeral Home, 419 E Terra Cotta Ave (IL Rt. 176), Crystal Lake, Illinois. The funeral service will follow at 1 pm at the funeral home.
