Cary, Illinois,Marvin Dean Sampson, "Sam", age 73, of Cary, passed away on December 17, 2010. He was born March 21, 1937 in Spencer, Iowa and spent his childhood in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He and his closest friends moved to Elgin in the early 1960?s but he always made sure people knew he was from the great state of Iowa. Sam was an avid sports fan. He played basketball in high school and college and especially liked the Iowa Hawkeyes. He read so widely in sports that he could discuss in detail almost any basketball, baseball or football team or player in the last 40 years. He worked for Material Service in Algonquin for 33 years retiring in 2000. He was known by his coworkers as "The King" and was often involved in some sort of prank or practical joke with them. Spinning tales was his specialty. He was a proud member of Local Union 681. Those who knew Sam will miss his sense of humor and his generosity. He made friends easily and treated those he encountered throughout his day with respect and appreciation. It was not uncommon for him to bring flowers to his bank teller or candy to the women who worked at the grocery store. He was the beloved husband of 44 years to the late Mauri Lee Sampson, whom he married on January 25, 1964. He was the loving father of Becky (Chuck Spoto) Sampson Fleissner, and the loving stepfather of Doug (Karen) Waters, Pam (Steve) Cray, and Liz Waters. He was the adored grandfather of Elaina and Elissa Cray and special "Grandpa Sam" to Dallas Calderon. He will also be missed by his neighbors and special friends John Vitous and Laura Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife Mauri, parents Melvin & Ann Sampson, sister Elaine Howard, and stepdaughter Sandra Waters. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 21 from 9:30am until the time of service at 1:00pm, at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Avenue (Rte 176), Crystal Lake. Interment will be on held on Wednesday, December 22 at 11:00am, at Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery, 30W730 US Hwy 20 Elgin, IL.
