Mary Zajicek Cook, 98, died on January 25, 2018, 26 years to the day after her husband of nearly 50 years, passed away in 1992. Mary was born in Nova Ves, Czechoslovakia on August 7, 1919 and immigrated to the United States when she was four years old with her mother Marie Jurasek Zajicek. Her father, Frank, had immigrated the prior year and sponsored the admission of his wife and daughter. Mary grew up and was educated in Mason City, Iowa. Mary worked in various retail positions. She later was employed by Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, where she became deputy auditor. She retired in 1982.
Mary loved to bake and cook for her family, especially her grandsons. She enjoyed pottery classes and spending time with her family and friends. She volunteered at St. Joseph Parish in Mason City and Resurrection Catholic Church in Woodstock. She was a life long member of the Western Bohemian Fraternal Association.
Mary is survived by her son, Dr. Richard Cook, and his wife, Sara, of Huntley, Illinois; one sister, Mrs. Lydia Kasik of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; and five grandsons, Thomas Cook and his wife, Kim, of Kansas City, Missouri; Richard (Joe) Cook, and his wife Kelly; and Daniel Cook, William Cook, and James Cook, all of Chicago. Her husband, Richard Cook, and her parents preceded her in death.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11 AM with a time of visitation starting an hour prior at 10 am at Resurrection Catholic Church, 2918 Country Club Rd., Woodstock, IL 60098. Interment will be held privately in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City, IA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Resurrection Catholic Church Outreach to the Needy Program, 2918 S. Country Club Rd. Woodstock, IL 60098.
